2205 is a duplex (austenitic-ferritic) stainless steel containing about 40 – 50% ferrite in the annealed condition. 2205 has been a practical solution to chloride stress corrosion cracking problems experienced with 304/304L or 316/316L stainless. The high chromium, molybdenum and nitrogen contents provide corrosion resistance superior to 316/316L and 317L stainless in most environments. 2205 is not suggested for operating temperatures above 600°F.

The design strength of 2205 is significantly higher than 316/316L, often permitting lighter wall construction. 2205 has good notch impact toughness down to temperatures below – 40°F. 2205 is welded with E2209 or ER2209 fillers.

The chemical composition of 2205 Duplex Stainless Pipe consists of the elements being used in the following content i.e. – 22% chromium, 3% molybdenum and about 5 to 6% nickel. Because of the content, in terms of quantity of chromium present in the alloy of this grade, this stainless steel is also referred to as 22cr Duplex 2205 Pipe.

Although when the 2205 duplex stainless tubing material has been exposed to temperatures above 572°F, even when the exposure is for a short period of time, the duplex 2205 seamless tube is subject to embrittlement.  Therefore, 2205 duplex pipe is not recommended to be used at a temperature above 572°F. Due to the presence of higher chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen contents, 2205 duplex stainless steel tubes demonstrates superior corrosion resistant properties in comparison to the more conventionally used austenitic stainless steel grades 316 and 316L in most environments.

What is Duplex 2205 pipe?

2205 duplex stainless steel tubing is the most widely used alloy grade across various industrial sectors. The 2205 duplex stainless tubing has been characterized by high yield strength, which means that the yield strength of this alloy is double or two times that of a conventionally used austenitic stainless steel grade. Corrosion Resistance

2205 duplex stainless steelis a cost effective solution for many applications where the 300 series stainless steels are susceptible to chloride stress corrosion cracking. Stress corrosion cracking occurs when stainless steels are subjected to tensile stress, while in contact with solutions containing chlorides. Increasing temperatures also increase the susceptibility of stainless steels to stress corrosion cracking.

The combination of chromium, molybdenum and nitrogen convey the good resistance of 2205to chloride pitting and crevice corrosion. This resistance is extremely important for services such as marine environments, brackish water, bleaching operations, closed loop water systems and some food processing applications. Duplex 2205 Tube is stainless steel tube. It belongs to a family of stainless steels called as the duplex steels. There are different groups of this material. The pipes of this family could be formed either by cold drawing of by hot rolling and welding. The Alloy 2205 Seamless Tube is cold drawn and it has less absolute roughness. The seamless ones are less strong than the Duplex SS 2205 Welded Tubing but are highly precise in dimension. The precision in dimension is useful in highly sensitive applications which require precision in measurements and calculations. The specialty of Duplex 2205 Seamless Tube is that it contains a dual nature. It is neither ferritic nor austenitic but contains the best of both parts. The Duplex 2205 Tube is a super duplex grade tube and it contains ferritic and austenitic steel phases in its structure. Therefore the strength and the corrosion resistance properties are improved. The Duplex 2205 Seamless Tube could be used in applications like the marine and underwater application which are exposed to chloride ion rich environments.

The ASTM A790 Duplex 2205 Welded Tube is stronger and also possesses the same corrosion resistance properties. It has less absolute roughness but has more strength than the seamless pipes. The 2205 Duplex Tube applications require different shapes, sizes and pressure classes of the pipes. The SA 789 Alloy 2205 4 inch Tube is used in medium range fluid transfers. There are other sizes that range from ½” up to 42” and more. Depending on the application requirements, the pipes are sometimes custom made. These are used in petrochemical, chemical, food processing, pulp and paper, oil and gas and organic acid production industries as well. The Duplex SS 2205 Schedule 40 Tube can withstand high pressure and is used in condensers and heat exchangers.

FINISHES

# 1 – Hot rolled annealed and descaled. It is available in strip, foil and ribbon. It is used for applications where a smooth decorative finish is not required.
# 2D – Dull finish produced by cold rolling, annealing and descaling. Used for deep drawn parts and those parts that need to retain lubricants in the forming process. # 2B – Smooth finish produced by cold rolling, annealing and descaling. A light cold rolling pass is added after anneal with polished rolls giving it a brighter finish than 2D.

# 2BA- Smooth finish produced by cold rolling and bright annealing. A light pass using highly polished rolls produces a glossy finish.
