Project Description

04Cr13Ni5Mo (S41500 / X3CrNiMo13-4 / 1.4313) Stainless Steel Seamless Tube

04Cr13Ni5Mo — also designated as S41500 (UNS 41500) under ASTM, SUSF6NM under JIS, and X3CrNiMo13-4 / 1.4313 under EN — is a low-carbon martensitic stainless steel engineered for applications demanding high strength combined with superior toughness and corrosion resistance. Unlike conventional martensitic grades such as 410, the reduced carbon content and deliberate additions of nickel (3.5–5.5%) and molybdenum (0.50–1.00%) give this grade outstanding weldability, resistance to cavitation erosion, and reliable performance in mildly corrosive environments including fresh water, steam, and neutral chloride-bearing media.

At Fushun Steel Tube, we manufacture 04Cr13Ni5Mo seamless tubes through hot-rolling followed by cold-drawing or cold-rolling for precision applications. Each tube is heat-treated to exacting parameters — typically QT — and undergoes comprehensive non-destructive and destructive testing before shipment. Whether your specification calls for ASTM A182 F6NM, EN 10088-3 1.4313, or GB/T 4237 04Cr13Ni5Mo, we deliver tubes that meet the full range of international standards. Fushun Steel Tube's in-house steelmaking capability — EAF + LF + VD, with optional ESR or VIM+VAR upgrades — ensures precise control over alloying elements and low inclusion content, producing clean steel with uniform properties throughout each tube.

Manufacturing Process

Production of 04Cr13Ni5Mo seamless tubes begins with our EAF + LF + VD steelmaking route, which achieves precise chemistry control and low gas content. For critical applications — such as turbine shafts or subsea components — we offer upgraded melting via ESR or VIM+VAR to further reduce inclusions and improve homogeneity. The molten steel is continuously cast into rounds, which are then pierced and hot-rolled on a retained-mandrel mill or Assel mill to produce mother tubes. These are subsequently cold-drawn or cold-rolled to achieve the required final dimensions, surface finish, and mechanical properties. Each tube receives the specified heat treatment — typically austenitizing at 950–1050 °C followed by oil or air quenching and tempering at 580–680 °C — before proceeding to final inspection. Mechanical Properties

Mechanical properties of 04Cr13Ni5Mo / S41500 seamless tubes depend on the heat treatment condition. ASTM A182 defines three classes for F6NM forgings; the same property ranges serve as benchmarks for seamless tube products when specified. The table below summarizes minimum and typical values achieved at Fushun Steel Tube.

Mechanical properties of 04Cr13Ni5Mo / S41500 by heat treatment condition (room temperature)
Condition Standard Tensile Strength (MPa) Yield Strength (MPa) Elongation (%) Reduction of Area (%) Hardness (HB) Impact (KV, J)
QT Class 1 ASTM A182 ≥ 790 ≥ 620 ≥ 15 ≥ 45 ≤ 295 ≥ 50
QT Class 2 ASTM A182 ≥ 830 ≥ 690 ≥ 12 ≥ 35 ≤ 321 ≥ 40
QT Class 3 (double temper) ASTM A182 ≥ 900 ≥ 795 ≥ 12 ≥ 35 ≤ 350 ≥ 30
QT650 EN 10088-3 700 – 850 ≥ 500 ≥ 15 ≥ 50
QT780 EN 10088-3 780 – 980 ≥ 620 ≥ 14 ≥ 40
QT900 EN 10088-3 900 – 1100 ≥ 750 ≥ 12 ≥ 30

When ordering, specify the target strength class and applicable standard. We can tailor the tempering parameters to balance strength, toughness, and hardness for your specific application.

Heat Treatment

Proper heat treatment is critical to achieving the intended combination of strength and toughness in 04Cr13Ni5Mo. The typical processing route consists of austenitizing followed by quenching and single or double tempering. For stress relief after welding or machining, a subcritical stress-relief treatment is applied.

Recommended heat treatment parameters for 04Cr13Ni5Mo / S41500 / 1.4313
Treatment Temperature (°C) Holding Time Cooling Method
Austenitizing 950 – 1050 30–60 min per 25 mm of section thickness Oil quench or forced air cool
Tempering (single) 580 – 680 2–4 hours minimum Air cool
Tempering (double) 620 – 680 (1st)
590 – 620 (2nd)
2 hours minimum each cycle Air cool to room temperature between cycles
Stress Relieving 550 – 620 1 hour per 25 mm of section thickness Slow furnace cool or still air cool

Double tempering — used for Class 3 (ASTM A182) and QT900 (EN 10088-3) conditions — raises strength by precipitating fine carbides and transforming retained austenite to fresh martensite during the first temper, which is then tempered in the second cycle. This approach achieves tensile strengths exceeding 900 MPa while retaining adequate toughness.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between 04Cr13Ni5Mo and standard 410 stainless steel?
04Cr13Ni5Mo contains lower carbon (≤0.04%) plus deliberate additions of nickel (3.5–5.5%) and molybdenum (0.50–1.00%). This chemistry delivers significantly better weldability, through-section toughness, and pitting corrosion resistance compared to standard 410 (1Cr13), which has higher carbon and no intentional nickel or molybdenum.
What are the typical size ranges for 04Cr13Ni5Mo seamless tubes?
Hot-rolled seamless tubes cover OD 32–530 mm with WT 2.5–50 mm. Cold-drawn and cold-rolled precision tubes cover OD 6–120 mm with WT 1–12 mm. Standard lengths are 5.8–12 m fixed-length or random-length. Custom dimensions are available with an MOQ of 2–3 tons.
Can 04Cr13Ni5Mo / S41500 seamless tubes be welded?
