Project Description
E420J2 (1.0599) is a vanadium-microalloyed quality steel seamless circular tube specified under EN 10297-1 for mechanical and general engineering applications. The designation “E” identifies a non-alloy engineering steel, “420” denotes the minimum yield strength of 420 MPa in the normalized (+N) delivery condition, and the suffix “J2” guarantees impact toughness of ≥27 J at −20 °C (longitudinal) — the highest strength level within the EN 10297-1 non-alloy range that carries a certified sub-zero notch toughness guarantee. Strength is developed through a combination of elevated manganese (Mn 1.30–1.70%) and vanadium microalloying (V 0.08–0.15%), which provides both solid-solution strengthening and V(C,N) precipitation hardening in the normalized condition. Supplied by FUSHUN METAL under ISO 9001 and AS9120B certified quality management, every heat is delivered with EN 10204 Type 3.1 traceability including Charpy V-notch test reports. E420J2 seamless tubes are specified for heavy-duty hydraulic cylinders, mining and earthmoving equipment, offshore structural components, high-capacity crane booms, and pressure-retaining parts where both elevated strength and fracture-safe behaviour at low ambient temperatures are simultaneously required.

Typical Applications of E420J2 Seamless Tubes
Multi-stage telescopic cylinder barrels, piston accumulators, and high-pressure cylinder bodies for mobile cranes, excavators, and dump trucks. E420J2 offers the yield-to-weight ratio needed for compact cylinder design while the J2 Charpy guarantee safeguards against brittle fracture during cold-start operation in northern and high-altitude environments.
Dump truck body hinge pins, excavator arm pivot bosses, bulldozer push-arm sleeves, and dragline structural members. The combined 420 MPa yield and certified Charpy at −20 °C meet the service requirements of open-pit and underground mining where impact loading at sub-zero temperatures is a daily operational reality.
Jack-up leg chord members, crane pedestal tubes, riser tensioner cylinders, and ROV launch-and-recovery structural tubing. The V-Nb microalloyed chemistry provides fine prior-austenite grain size, yielding consistent through-thickness toughness essential for HSE-critical offshore applications.
Lattice boom chords, telescopic boom sections, and outrigger box structures for crawler and all-terrain cranes above 100 t lifting capacity. The 420 MPa minimum yield enables lighter boom designs and higher lift charts, while J2 toughness eliminates brittle fracture concerns during winter erection projects.
Accumulator shells, intensifier bodies, heat exchanger tube sheets, and high-pressure fluid distribution manifolds. E420J2 is selected where PED 2014/68/EU or ASME Section VIII Div. 1 requires a combination of elevated design strength and verified notch toughness at the minimum design metal temperature.
Forging press columns, extrusion press container liners, wind turbine main-shaft spacers, and injection moulding machine tie bars. The V-microalloyed chemistry provides a uniform tempered bainitic-ferritic microstructure after normalizing, delivering consistent mechanical properties along the full tube length for precision-machined engineering components.
E420J2 Supply Dimensions
FUSHUN METAL supplies EN 10297-1 E420J2 seamless tubes across three manufacturing routes. Standard delivery condition is normalized (+N). Incoming dimensional verification, OES chemistry checks, and Charpy V-notch testing are performed on every heat lot sourced from ISO 9001 and AS9120B-certified production lines before release.

E420J2 Chemical Composition (Ladle Analysis, %)
| C | Si | Mn | P | S | V | Al | Cr | Ni | Mo | Nb |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0.16–0.22 | 0.10–0.50 | 1.30–1.70 | ≤0.030 | ≤0.035 | 0.08–0.15 | ≥0.01 | ≤0.30 | ≤0.40 | ≤0.08 | ≤0.07 |
Supplemental limits: Cu ≤0.30%, N ≤0.02%, Ti ≤0.05%. The combined Nb+V content shall not exceed 0.20%. Vanadium (0.08–0.15%) is the principal microalloying addition and forms fine V(C,N) precipitates during normalizing, contributing precipitation strengthening without the need for quenching and tempering. This V-microalloyed design—shared with E470 but with tighter Mn control and mandatory Al for grain refinement—distinguishes E420J2 from plain C-Mn grades such as E355. Compared with E470 (+AR delivery without Charpy), E420J2 is always supplied normalized (+N) with mandatory −20 °C Charpy verification. FUSHUN METAL performs OES verification on every incoming heat, with spectral records retained for the full traceability chain.

The defining capability of E420J2 is the simultaneous delivery of 420 MPa minimum yield strength and guaranteed −20 °C Charpy V-notch toughness — a combination unmatched by any other EN 10297-1 non-alloy grade. Typical Brinell hardness ranges from 155 to 205 HBW in the normalized condition. Normalizing is performed at 890–930 °C followed by still-air cooling, producing a fine-grained ferrite-pearlite microstructure with dispersed V(C,N) precipitates. Tighter control of Nb+V (<0.20% total) relative to E470 limits excessive precipitation strengthening that would otherwise elevate the ductile-to-brittle transition temperature above the J2 threshold. FUSHUN METAL issues EN 10204 Type 3.1 certification with full tensile and Charpy results for every shipment.
