Project Description
E470 Seamless Steel Tube — Overview
E470 (1.0536) is a microalloyed quality steel seamless circular tube specified under EN 10297-1 for mechanical and general engineering purposes. Designation “E” identifies an engineering steel tube grade, and “470” denotes the minimum yield strength of 470 MPa in the as-rolled (+AR) delivery condition. E470 achieves its elevated strength through V-N precipitation strengthening combined with niobium grain refinement, without requiring the higher carbon content of heat-treatable grades. The standard delivery condition is as-rolled (+AR), with the option of cold-working plus normalising. FUSHUN METAL supplies EN 10297-1 E470 seamless tubes under ISO 9001 and AS9120B certified quality management, with full traceability per EN 10204 Type 3.1 certification. Every heat undergoes incoming optical emission spectrometry verification and dimensional conformity checks. As the first microalloyed strength tier above the non-alloy EN 10297-1 grades (E235–E355), E470 is specified for heavy-duty hydraulic cylinders, automotive drivetrain components, and high-stress mechanical assemblies where 470 MPa minimum yield is required without resorting to quench-and-temper steels.

Chemical Composition of E470
Ladle analysis limits per EN 10297-1 for E470 (1.0536). FUSHUN METAL verifies each heat via optical emission spectrometry as part of incoming quality control. The addition of V and Nb to the base C-Si-Mn composition enables precipitation strengthening and grain refinement, achieving 470 MPa minimum yield in the as-rolled condition.
| Element | C | Si | Mn | P | S | V | Nb | N | Al |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Min % | 0.16 | 0.10 | 1.30 | — | — | 0.08 | — | — | 0.010 |
| Max % | 0.22 | 0.50 | 1.70 | 0.030 | 0.035 | 0.15 | 0.07 | 0.020 | — |
V (0.08–0.15%) combines with N to form fine V(C,N) precipitates that strengthen the ferrite-pearlite microstructure through precipitation hardening. Nb (≤0.07%) and Al (≥0.010%) refine the austenite grain size during hot rolling, reducing the ductile-to-brittle transition temperature. The base C-Mn-Si chemistry closely resembles that of the non-alloy E355 grade, with the V-Nb-N microalloying delivering the additional 115–120 MPa of strength.

Additional Product Data for E470
Seamless process only (hot-finished, cold-drawn, or cold-rolled). As-rolled (+AR) is the standard delivery condition per EN 10297-1. Alternative: cold-worked plus normalised (+C+N) at 880–920 °C followed by controlled air cooling. FUSHUN METAL ensures full compliance with controlled piercing at 1200–1240 °C and inter-stage annealing at 720 °C for cold-worked products, all under ISO 9001 and AS9120B audited processes.
Mandatory: ladle analysis, room-temperature tensile test, flattening test, dimensional inspection, visual surface examination, non-destructive testing. EN 10204 Type 3.1 certification standard; Type 3.2 available on request. Optional: Charpy V-notch impact test, hardness test, eddy current testing per EN 10893-2, ultrasonic testing per EN 10893-10.
Good weldability with all common arc welding processes. Preheat to 150–200 °C recommended for wall thickness >15 mm or ambient temperature below 5 °C. Post-weld stress relief at 530–580 °C advised for thick sections and restrained joints. Cold formability is adequate for bending and flaring; hot forming at 850–1050 °C yields best results for severe deformation. The V-N microalloyed design maintains good toughness despite the higher strength level.
Surface finishes: black (as-rolled), pickled & oiled, bright (cold-finished), honed (for cylinder applications). Corrosion protection: varnish coating, hot-dip galvanising, or epoxy paint on request. Standard packing: hexagonal bundled with steel straps, end caps for thin-walled tubes, weatherproof wrapping. Marking includes steel grade, heat number, dimensions, and manufacturer identification. FUSHUN METAL can supply to specific OEM packing and labelling requirements.
