Project Description

Introduction

Precision carbon steel seamless tubes engineered for automotive shock absorbers and hydraulic damping systems represent a critical intersection of structural integrity, dimensional accuracy, and surface quality. At Fushun Steel Tube, we manufacture these tubes to serve simultaneously as high-pressure hydraulic cylinders and load-bearing structural members. They are capable of enduring millions of compression-rebound cycles without compromising seal performance or damping consistency.

Produced through hot-rolled seamless piercing followed by multi-pass cold drawing or cold rolling, our tubes deliver exceptional concentricity, straightness, and bore finish. We supply a comprehensive range of low-to-medium carbon steel grades, enabling engineers to precisely match material strength, hardenability, and fatigue resistance to specific damper architectures.

Whether your project requires a lightweight passenger car strut, a high-performance monotube shock, or a heavy-duty commercial vehicle damper, our flexible manufacturing and strict metallurgical control ensure reliable dynamic performance. Tell us your specifications, and our technical team will recommend the optimal grade and processing route for your application.

Core Engineering & Structural Design

The seamless manufacturing route eliminates weld seams, ensuring uniform radial stress distribution during high-frequency piston reciprocation. By combining advanced steelmaking, precision cold working, and customizable heat treatment, we deliver shock absorber tubes that meet global engineering expectations while optimizing total cost of ownership. Our integrated production line guarantees that every tube meets strict geometric tolerances before reaching your assembly floor.

Manufacturing Process

Smelting Route: Our carbon steel billets are produced via EAF + LF + VD to ensure low gas content, tight inclusion control, and consistent chemistry. For applications demanding superior fatigue life or ultra-clean microstructures, we offer ESR or VIM + VAR upon request.

Tube Manufacturing: Production begins with hot-rolled seamless piercing, followed by rotary rolling and sizing. For precision shock absorber tubes, the mother tubes undergo spheroidize annealing, pickling, and multi-pass cold drawing or cold rolling. This is followed by stress-relief or normalization heat treatment, precision straightening, and cutting.

For hydraulic cylinder applications, we further process cold-drawn tubes through internal honing or skiving & roller burnishing (SRB). Every processing step is customizable; our metallurgical team will work with you to select the optimal route based on your strength, tolerance, and surface requirements.

Surface Finish & Tolerances

Fushun Steel Tube delivers shock absorber tubes with surface conditions matched to your assembly and sealing requirements:

  • Hot-Rolled Seamless: Available as-rolled (black surface) or pickled. Suitable for outer reserve cylinders or non-sealing structural sleeves.
  • Cold-Drawn Precision: Bright finish with tight dimensional control. Standard tolerances: OD ±0.10 mm (or ISO h8/h9), WT ±5–8%. Ideal for inner working cylinders requiring consistent piston clearance.
  • Honed / SRB Tubes: Internal surface roughness Ra ≤ 0.4 μm (standard), with options down to Ra ≤ 0.2 μm for high-performance damping applications. ID tolerance typically H8/H9.
  • External Machining: OD turning or centerless grinding available upon request, achieving h7/h6 tolerances and Ra ≤ 0.8 μm for press-fit or threaded assembly interfaces.

All surface processing is performed in-house, ensuring traceability and eliminating intermediate handling damage.

Quality Assurance & Testing

Quality is embedded at every stage of our production chain. Fushun Steel Tube operates under an ISO 9001 certified management system, with inspection protocols aligned to international tubing standards:

  • Raw Material Verification: Optical emission spectrometry (OES) for full chemical analysis; inclusion rating and macrostructure review.
  • In-Process Control: Laser diameter monitoring, ultrasonic wall-thickness measurement, and straightness checks after each drawing pass.
  • Non-Destructive Testing (NDT): Ultrasonic testing (UT) and Eddy Current testing (ET) for defect detection; Magnetic Particle inspection (MT) for end regions.
  • Hydrostatic Test: Pressure testing to validate structural integrity and leak-tightness.
  • Mechanical & Metallographic: Tensile, yield, elongation, hardness, Charpy impact (if specified), and grain size evaluation.
  • Certification & Third-Party: Every shipment includes an EN 10204 3.1 Mill Test Certificate. EN 10204 3.2 certification with independent witness testing can be arranged. We welcome SGS, TÜV, or BV inspections.

Packing & Shipping

Proper packaging preserves precision tolerances and surface quality during transit. Hot-rolled or pickled tubes are coated with anti-rust oil, bundled with high-tensile steel straps, and fitted with plastic end caps to prevent edge damage. Precision bright or honed tubes are individually capped, wrapped in VCI anti-corrosion paper or protective film, and packed in reinforced wooden crates or steel frames to prevent bending and surface abrasion.

We support ocean freight, air cargo, and cross-border land transport. Custom labeling, barcode tracking, and project-specific shipping marks are available. All packaging complies with ISPM 15 standards for international export.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you manufacture shock absorber tubes in non-standard OD/WT combinations?
Yes. Our cold-drawing and pilgering lines accommodate custom dimensions outside standard catalogs. For non-standard sizes, the MOQ is typically 2–3 tons, and we will provide a detailed tolerance and tooling feasibility assessment before production.
Which grade do you recommend for inner working cylinders vs. outer reserve tubes?
For inner cylinders where bore finish and seal compatibility are critical, AISI 1020 / EN C20E (normalized or stress-relieved) is the industry standard. For outer reserve tubes, AISI 1010 / EN C10E provides excellent formability and cost efficiency. Heavy-duty applications often specify AISI 1045 / EN C45E with induction-hardened bores.
What heat treatment conditions are available for these carbon steel tubes?
We supply tubes in cold-drawn (BK), normalized (NBK), stress-relieved (GBK), or quenched & tempered conditions. The optimal state depends on your downstream machining, welding, and fatigue requirements. Our technical team can recommend the exact cycle based on your design loads.
How do you ensure bore surface quality meets automotive damping standards?
All precision tubes undergo multi-pass cold drawing with controlled reduction ratios, followed by protective-atmosphere heat treatment to prevent decarburization. For hydraulic cylinder applications, we apply internal honing or SRB to achieve Ra ≤ 0.4 μm, with optional Ra ≤ 0.2 μm for premium damper programs.
What is the typical lead time, and do you support prototype orders?
Stocked sizes in common grades ship within ~7 days. Custom production runs require 25–35 days. We actively support prototype and validation phases with small-batch trial orders, allowing you to test material performance before committing to volume contracts.
